Released on July 19, 1991, Final Fantasy IV for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) is a landmark Japanese role-playing game developed and published by Square. It was originally launched in North America under the title Final Fantasy II due to skipped entries in western localization. The game is widely celebrated for revolutionizing the RPG genre by introducing a heavily character-driven narrative and pioneering the series' iconic real-time battle mechanics.
Core Plot & Characters
The story follows Cecil Harvey, a conflicted Dark Knight and captain of the Red Wings, an elite airship fleet belonging to the Kingdom of Baron. When the King orders increasingly cruel military campaigns to seize magical crystals from peaceful nations, Cecil questions his monarch's sanity and is stripped of his command.
His quest for redemption evolves into an epic journey to stop the sorcerer Golbez from destroying the world. Cecil is joined by a memorable ensemble cast of up to a dozen shifting party members, including:
- Kain Highwind: A mysterious Dragoon commander and Cecil's childhood friend.
- Rosa Farrell: A skilled White Mage, archer, and Cecil's primary love interest.
- Rydia: A young, resilient Black Mage capable of summoning powerful mythical beasts.
- Edge: A confident ninja prince wielding unique offensive stealth skills.
- Gameplay Mechanics
- Active Time Battle (ATB): The game debuted the revolutionary ATB system. Instead of traditional static turn-based turns, time flows constantly during combat, forcing players to make strategic choices in real-time.
- Five-Character Party: It stands as the only main-line entry in the series to allow a maximum party capacity of five characters active in battle at once.
- Fixed Character Classes: Unlike previous titles with interchangeable jobs, characters have unchangeable roles built specifically into their story identities.
Localization Differences
The original North American SNES release was significantly simplified compared to the Japanese Super Famicom version. Several unique character abilities (such as Rosa's Pray and Yang's Focus) were entirely removed. The difficulty was noticeably lowered, item counts were reduced, and the English script famously featured heavily censored, sometimes comical dialogue—giving birth to the classic internet meme phrase, "You spoony bard!".
